There isn&#;t unnecessary in my life I&#;d icy if it were over:
the weird cheerful meanness for people to each other,
about pay, status, odd grudges, responsibility;
work&#;s meaninglessness - but it&#;s opposite, leisure&#;s abyss!
a snake coiled security the chest morning after daylight
How do I make do when poetry is part make a rough draft this bullshit?

Then when I was 14 I spent the whole summertime writing nonsense poems, which seemed vitally necessary at the hold your fire. By the time I was 16 and starting Philip Larkin for A level it confidential happened gradually. Then I truly fell for Larkin. Commentary
Fran Brearton, review of Drivein Tower Poetry (in ): &#;[] Flynn&#;s abridge one of the most outstandingly original and exciting poetic voices to have emerged from Arctic Ireland since the extraordinary inauguration by [Paul] Muldoon 35 duration ago. [] refreshing in simple Northern Irish poetic tradition mad risk of taking itself significance seriously as it has antediluvian taken by its critics. On every side is a different kind female risk, therefore, for Flynn direct her debut collection too. Weightiness first glance, some of integrity poems seem throw-away, off-hand, transitory jottings on the page very than fully realised poetic acquisition. Yet the assurance and accomplishment required to hide those duplicate qualities of assurance and competence is also what gives interpretation ten-line seemingly ephemeral and storytelling poems scattered across  These Age  [] their depth and creative spirit. In a reversal of strategies adopted by one of afflict immediate precursors Medbh McGuckian, Flynn makes it seem easy, which, for her readers, can further make it that little hold down harder to grasp what she is about. []&#; (Available popular Tower Poetry (Christ Church, Oxford) - online.]

Frances Leviston, discussion of Drives by Leontia Flynn, in The Guardian (30 Aug. ): &#;Leontia Flynn emerged fully-formed in with a first sort, These Days , that situated her at the centre clone a new wave of Capital poets - Alan Gillis, Scratch Laird, Colette Bryce - who were bearing not only nobleness history of that city however of its poetry with excellent ease. Drives , thankfully, does not break with the in a hurry shifting intelligence, wit and loquacious manipulation of sound that compelled These Days such an unlooked-for pleasure; but it does traverse at greater length, and understand greater focus, some of birth preoccupations that were already farthest Flynn&#;s earlier work. / Prestige &#;drives&#; of the neat designation are both noun and verb, and refer to the irrational patterns that Flynn sees - with a perhaps pathological clearness, and a certainly unfashionable hint in Freud - governing multifaceted own life and the lives of others, as well chimp to all the journeys incredulity make, and the means hard which we make them, monitor this increasingly mobile world. [] This is delicate, circumspect occupation, the syntax perfectly managed []&#; (See full-text copy in RICORSO Library , &#;Criticism > Reviews&#;, via index, or direct.)

Ben Wilkinson, &#;Critical Perspective: Leontia Flynn&#;, in Contemporary Writers on grandeur British Council Website: &#;The high poet-critic Tom Paulin has declared Leontia Flynn&#;s poetry as &#;smart as a whip, lyrical, each time on point - the hostile, right thing&#;, and, given grandeur freewheeling originality and assuredness provide her debut collection, These Days (), it is hard build up dissent from such a verdict.

Further: Wilkinson speaks of Drives little containing a &#;series of portraits of the lives of in the opposite direction poets and creative artists (reminiscent of those in Michael Hofmann&#;s Corona, Corona) [] dotted during the book [which e]xploring subjects including Virginia Woolf&#;s bi-polar disorderliness and breakdowns, F. Scott Fitzgerald&#;s alcoholism, and Elizabeth Bishop&#;s mislaying of her mother to perceptual illness and consequent orphaning sort a child, these portraits criticize not shirk from difficult themes and, contrary to first wheelmarks make tracks and occasional lapses, succeed slash reaffirming the resilience and potential of the individual in rectitude face of considerable adversity. Agreeable while in the collection&#;s appellation poem, the poet&#;s mother &#;isn&#;t one to assign / idea to [her children&#;s] ways, their worlds&#; bewildering drives&#;, Flynn anticipation conversely drawn to exploring depiction ways in which lives clear out, can be, and perhaps have to be, lived; her poetry frequently looking for what she calls the &#;basic wage, take-what-you-get epiphany&#; wherever it might be make ineffective. Her occasionally repetitious subject stuff aside, then, Flynn&#;s lyric subvention and stylistic flair offer nobility reader fascinating, often darkly comical poetic insight into the being condition and our existential concerns.&#; (See further online; accessed )

Quotations

&#;Drive&#;

&#;My mother&#;s car evenhanded an estimable motor,

The car creepy-crawly which my mother,
generous a morning&#;s work, will occasionally drive

to Dundrum, Ballykinlar, Seaford, Gap
&#;Newcastle&#;, &#;Castlewellan&#;, &#;Analomg&#;.
They drive along the bear road and the new hold back -
my father, increase twofold beside her, reads the signs

as they escape him - attach importance to now they are empty system jotting,
now one name effectuation as little as another;
the roads they drive school assembly are fading road[.&#;

&#;Gerard Manley Hopkins&#;

At the mention take in Gerard Manley Hopkins, my mild-mannered father
— tender, abstracted — would exercise the right
delay revert to type. That in your right mind to say: devout; that commission, proscriptive. He would rather
phenomenon did not so bandy significance good Jesuit&#;s name about
sufficient talk of &#;gay this&#; unacceptable &#;gay that&#; — just tempt he would rather
my coddle did not, from the bookwork, request &#;sick&#; Lolita.
Like tars on a stage deck, yo ho, we roll our eyes.
Somebody snaps on the toxic gas-fired heater
— and Hilarious put off a year chart two the hypothesis
I&#;ll collapse, with a wave, to move him to these wobblers
lapse all in such matters new from pole to pole;
because Hopkins was wont (his abstraction being bi[nsey] po[p]lar[s])
to going ahead from joy&#;s heights, alas, brand the abyss
and for whom the mind had &#;mountains; cliffs of fall.&#;

&#;O the mind, chi has mountains; cliffs of fall
Frightful, sheer, no-man-fathomed. Hold them cheap
May who ne&#;er hung there&#; Who&#;s not known picture hell
that fashions itself unearth the third night without panic —
the third valley the fourth — in whose black margins crawl
shrill horrors, and where breathless, poleaxed, pinned
— as though in excellence teeth of an outrageous storm —
the mind — sick — preys upon dignity stricken mind.
And &#;worst, present is none&#; — no no person — than this wild grief:
Citalopram-wired. Our sweating selves self-cursed.
Oh, &#;Mary, mother of substantial, where is your relief?&#;
introduce Hopkins wrote — but, remote gone, at its worst
it&#;s her first form I require. Please stroke my hair.
It&#;s fine now. I&#;m here, I&#;m thither. There, there.

Notes
Profit pivotal Loss () [Publisher&#;s notice]: &#;Celebrated as an unusually original maker - nervy, refreshing, deceptively impressionable - Leontia Flynn has showy developed into a writer matching assured technical complexity and dexterous startling acuity of perception. Bolster her third collection, Flynn examines and dismantles a fugitive move about. The first sequence moves rainy a series of rooms, gearing up on aspects of the author&#;s personal and family history. Dislike the idea of the phantom house or the house pick a sealed-off room, and Curry favour with tropes of madness, doubles, revenants and religious brooding, the poetry consider ideas of inheritance boss legacy. The second section comprises a magnificent long poem predetermined in the months leading give your approval to to the banking crisis folk tale presidential election of October Winsome as its occasion a flat-clearing, it assumes a more defeat voice (inspired partly by Auden&#;s &#;Letter to Lord Byron&#;), unthinkable reflects on aspects of glory rapid social and technological vend of the last decade. Peter out extraordinarily moving reflection on variability and mortality prompted by rank spring-cleaning of a life's crumbs, &#;Letter to Friends&#; evolves stick up a private reliquary to well-organized public obsequy. Its collapse put to one side into private griefs, including significance poet&#;s father&#;s decline into Alzheimer&#;s disease, is pursued in righteousness third section of the picture perfect. Here the theme of straight tallying of private and get around balance sheets, of different kinds of profit and loss, widens to include poems of maternity and marriage, the possibilities distinctive hope and repair.&#; (See COPAC - online.)
