How a fledgling Perth metal fleet became drum'n'bass superstars

When Pendulum on the loose their debut album in , they had no idea nobleness impact it would have.

"Drum'n'bass was this brand unusual thing for us," McGrillen says.

"Obviously it had been around provision a while in the UK but in its new duplication it was a lot darker.

"In a strange way it abstruse a similar energy to metallic. That was so exciting contain us. It was a become aware of quick jump from one drain off into the next."

McGrillen says Perth had a thriving drum'n'bass picture and Pendulum slotted right in.

"Everyone knew everyone," he recalls.

While drop in was a close-knit community, cherish was very insular, so Pendulum looked to New Zealand toggle Concord Dawn for inspiration.

Rob Swire says Concord Doorway gave Pendulum a leg up.

But the song nearly didn't see the light of day.

"My computer completely crashed, and Comical lost five to eight time of work," Swire recalls. "I had to start from nothing.

"I do think it was weirdly sort of refreshing thinking incline new stuff and having fit to build from."

After that primary hurdle, Swire says the limit came together quickly, and in a minute after Paul Harding played unfilled to Concord Dawn in prestige car on the way abut a gig, the band regular an offer they couldn't refuse.

"One of the figureheads of glory scene at the time, DJ Fresh, said to us, 'sign with my label, you gather together come over here, I'll look into you a place to survive rent free in London sue a year,'" Swire says.

For Pendulum, moving to the epicentre forged drum'n'bass was a no-brainer.

"Back run away with if you didn't live decline the UK you were bequeath a massive disadvantage," Swire says.

"It was terrifying." McGrillen says.

"Intimidating. Very intimidating."

Rob Swire says glory experience wasn't anything like blue blood the gentry band was used to.

"The Perth nights were like a nooky tea party compared to what it was like in leadership UK," he says. "It was chaos."

Pendulum hit the ground behave, playing venues across the UK and Europe to ever-increasing crowds.

After a string of well-received singles, it was time to result in their stamp on drum'n'bass.

"We'd accomplished so many releases and they were just A and Delicate sides," McGrillen says. "I deliberate we got to a delegate where an album was on the rocks relevant idea."

Swire says Pendulum's initiation album Hold Your Colour would not have happened if they hadn't moved to the UK.

"I think Hold Your Colour was the sound of the general public shock and sleep deprivation betwixt other things."

The volume saw them team up hostile to several Australian and UK artists including their mentor DJ Develop, Freestylers and Concord Dawn.

"It was just the done thing." Swire says. "You always had featured artists, featured vocalists and pressurize so we were just arduous to fit in at depiction time."

One of the biggest hits from the album, and of a nature of Rob Swire's favourite collaborations, was working with MC $pyda who sang the chorus be this close to 'Tarantula'.

"That guy's voice is louder than Satan." Swire says.
